"By capturing the elegance and majesty of planet earth, I seek to bring an awareness & a recognition to those whose eyes may never have the chance to see such things in person. And, through this recognition of Creation, I hope to bring an even greater awareness and recognition to its Creator."

Joshua Allan Howard is a nature photographer based in Lexington, KY, a location that puts him in the heart of the continent and allows him easy access to its four incredible corners. Whether hiking through a blizzard in northern Utah or diving with the rays and barracuda under the tropical waters of the Florida Keys, he finds himself at home in the humbling brilliance and majesty of this world. He has a passion for capturing striking images of nature in all its vastness, beauty and overwhelming grandeur.

He has found his success when making not the final image his main goal but rather the journey. It is this experience along the way that gives him the drive and the focus to make his photography stand out from the crowd.

Psalm 19:1-2 “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.  Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.”

My work focuses on the concept of natural revelation; what can be learned about God merely through the observation of His creation.  The artwork is a study of intimate places and moments - where one cannot help but be enveloped by the constant echo of our Creator.  These intimate places are settings of tranquility and sereneness where, upon experiencing, one comes to the humble realization that they are nothing more than mere spectators in this world.

Through the use of my photographic techniques, I hope to provide a unique experience for the viewer – a moment where one has the opportunity to be taken away from the things of man and immersed into the realization of the divinity and greatness of God.

We are at a point in the photographic timeline where we have never before been so capable of capturing what we see before us. I started this process with film but have now completely embraced the new digital age. The sounds and smells of the darkroom have moved aside to allow room for the latest and greatest computer and software systems that money can buy.

With this digital power comes also a great need for restraint and responsibility. Saying this, I make every effort to capture only what the Lord has laid before my eyes, adding or subtracting nothing from the scene before me. For me, a successful image is captured not at the moment the shutter clicks but at the moment it is presented to the viewer. The steps that culminate to that successful image normally include a pre-visualization time before I even set up the tripod, the capturing of one or more exposures of a scene, the fine-tune adjusting (color correction, adjustments to tonality, contrast and luminosity) of the images in my digital darkroom and finally, a series of test prints before the print is ready to be signed and shipped. All of this is necessary to present you, the viewer, with an experience that rivals mine in intensity.
